Buratai becomes Nigeria's longest-serving Chief of Army Staff after serving for 66 months

- President Muhammadu Buhari appointed new service chiefs on Tuesday, January 26

- A statement from the presidency noted that the immediate past service chiefs resigned from their positions

- With his resignation, Major-General Tukur Buratai now takes a place in history as Nigeria's longest-serving Chief of Army Staff

Following his resignation as Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai now holds the title of the country's longest-serving Chief of Army Staff.

The Cable Index revealed that the Borno-born General spent a total of 66 months as the nation's top army chief.

He is followed closely by Late General Sani Abacha who went on to be Nigeria's military president, with 60 months.

David Ejoor served as the COAS for 56 months, TY Danjuma served for 51 months and Azubuike Ihejirika served for 40 months.

Out of those mentioned, only Danuma from Taraba state and Ihejirika from Abia state are still alive.

60-year old Buratai was commissioned in 1983 and has had multiple command, administrative, and instructional appointments before his appointment as the COAS by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

His operational deployments include military observer at the United Nations Verification Mission II in Angola, Operation Harmony IV in the Bakassi Pennisula, Operation MESA, Operation Pulo Shield, Operation Safe Conduct, Operation Zaman Lafiya and Operation Lafiya Dole.

Buratai had earlier vowed that the Nigerian army will shame and disgrace Boko Haram and the Islamic States for West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists in 2021.

Buratai gave the assurance at an event held in his hometown in Biu local government area of Borno state late last year.

On his part, President Buhari had promised to reorganise Nigeria's security architecture in 2021.

The president made the promise in his 2021 new year message to Nigerians on Friday, January 1, adding that the security agencies will be trained adequately on how to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups.
