Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has stated that he was initially questioned by the Chelsea hierarchy why he wanted to sign Didier Drogba.
The Portuguese tactician who was in charge of Porto in 2003 when he first met the Ivorian claimed that Chelsea chiefs raised concerns as regards why he opted to sign the Ivorian.
Mourinho also narrated what he saw in the player that prompted him to make a move while the he played for French club Marseille.
The current Tottenham boss said via SPORTbible:
"Didier Drogba came into my life in the fifth minute of a Champions League game in Marseille's mythical Velodrome.
"At half-time I found him in the tunnel and told him, 'I don't have the money to buy you, but do you have any cousins that can play like you in the Ivory Coast?' He laughed, hugged me and said, 'one day you'll be in a club which can buy me.'"
Barely six months later, Mourinho became the Chelsea manager and he remembered Drogba and had so much belief in the striker. He added:
"Six months later I signed for Chelsea. I had a number of options, but I arrived and said, 'I want Didier Drogba.' Doubts and questions were raised by a few people: 'Why this one?', 'Why not that one?', 'Are you sure he will adapt?', 'Is he really that good?'"
However, current Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes his side is to hit top form because they lack top quality players like Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and the likes.
The Blues' title chances have been shaky due to their poor run of result in recent matches and are now eight points off the top Premier League.
Chelsea spent over £200million on players but are languishing on seventh and Lampard has given his reason for the team's dip in form.
