Prayers, celebrations held at Kamala Harris' ancestral India village

Natives of Thulasendrapuram, the ancestral Indian village of Kamala Harris, offered special prayers and making merry hours before she is sworn in as the United States vice president on Wednesday, January 20.
Thulasendrapuram, 200 miles south of Chennai, has been the birthplace of Harris' maternal grandfather for over 100 years, The Independent reports.
While locals were seen offering prayers on the next US vice-president's behalf, sweets and biscuits were going round.

Born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, Harris is to become the first woman, first Black American, and first Asian American to attain the second highest office in the country.
One of the residents of the village who spoke with journalists, Anukampa Madhavasimhan, said:
“We are feeling very proud that an Indian is being elected as the vice president of America.”
Even more, a lot of the villagers are nursing hopes that Harris will emerge the president in 2024 since Joe Biden has remained silent on whether he will be going for re-election after his first tenure.

Meanwhile, Harris would be resigning her Senate seat ahead of her inauguration.
The resignation, according to Reuters, is to make her prepare for her inauguration as the vice president of the US at the expiration of Donald Trump's four-year tenure.
Biden and Harris are to be sworn-in to office as president and vice on Wednesday, January 20.
The report adds that her seat at the Senate would now be filled by Alex Padilla, California's Secretary of State.
Padilla, it was learnt, was nominated by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Meanwhile, on his part, Biden recently appointed three Nigerians into his would-be cabinet.
