The federal ministry of communications and digital economy has warned Nigerians to be wary of fraudsters as they make efforts to meet the deadline for National Identity Numbers (NIN) registration.

Isa Pantami, the minister who presides over the ministry of communications issued the warning in a Tweet on Tuesday, January 19.

He gave the warning after a parody account, mimicking the Nationa Identity Management Commission (NIMC) claimed that January 19 was the last day for Nigerians to do the National Identification Number (NIN) registration.

Pantami distanced the government from the controversial parody account and disclosed that the official Twitter handle for NINMC is @nimc_ng.

He also stated that NIN registration will continue till February 9 for Nigerians who do not yet have National Identification Numbers.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it is planning to make the NIN a prerequisite for the voters' registration exercise.

According to the electoral commission, this will help to tackle the problem of underage voting in some parts of the country.

Speaking with The Punch newspaper, one of the national commissioners at INEC whose name was not given made this disclosure, adding that the final decision would soon be reached and officially announced to the public

Meanwhile, a group, the African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR) asked the federal government to stop the ongoing NIN registration.

ACJHR in a statement in Abuja said the registration being carried out by NIMC exposes Nigerians to the risks of contracting COVID-19, The Sun reported.
