CAN releases 8 guidelines for churches, worshippers on COVID-19

Amid mounting scare across the country over the second wave of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the "sick and too old" people have been admonished to stay away from the worship centres.

This advice was given by the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Monday, January 18, in a statement released by the body's general secretary, Joseph Daramola.

CAN warned that COVID-19 is real and deadly, saying all its member must follow all the necessary safety protocols which include "no entry without facemasks."

Other guidelines as contained in the statement sighted on The Nation are:

1. Attendance should not exceed 1/3 of the sitting capacity of every Church

2. No entry without facemasks.

The CAN said all worshippers including the worship leaders must wear face masks. There should be no exceptional cases.

3. There should be temperature screening at every entry point to the Church.

4. Ensure adequate ventilation in halls of worship, open windows, and doors for air to circulate.

5. Hand washing facilities and hand sanitisers should be provided with church promises.

6. Practices that require sharing of materials should be limited.

7. Every church should make use of medical personnel to assist.

8. Church auditorium should be clearly marked such that people sit and maintain two metres distance from each other.

Nigeria presently has 110,387 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 89,317 total recoveries and 1,435 deaths as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 1444 new cases on Sunday, January 17.

Meanwhile, the reopening of schools slated for Monday, January 18, is generating hiccups as the House of Representatives faulted the decision, citing a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Reacting to the January 18 directive in a statement, Julius Ihonvbere, chairman of the House committee on basic education, said the reopening will pose a threat to the fight against the second wave of COVID-19.

Ihonvbere said the legislative arm was not reached before the federal government arrived at the decision, adding that the resumption date be postponed by three months.

"Why are we rushing to reopen schools without adequate verifiable and sustainable arrangements to protect and secure our children?"
