COVID-19: Edo govt releases update on schools' reopening

- With a surge in the cases of COVID-19, Edo state government said it has suspended schools' reopening

- The state government announced the decision on Friday, adding that it is a step towards curbing the spread of coronavirus

- Edo government also said it has released a set of new guidelines for markets, social and religious gatherings, nightclubs and others

Edo has made a U-turn on the full reopening of schools, with the state government announcing that schools will no longer reopen on Monday, January 18, for the second term of 2020/2021 academic session.

The new development was announced on Friday, January 15, by Governor Godwin Obaseki in a tweet on his official Twitter handle.

According to the governor, the subsisting curfew imposed on the state by the government has been reviewed to 10pm - 5am daily to avoid the spread of the deadly virus.

The governor also announced that new guidelines have been issued for markets, hospitality industry, night clubs, religious and social gatherings, and others.

"We have suspended schools' resumption & reviewed the subsisting curfew to 10pm - 5am daily, to halt the spread of #COVID19.
"New guidelines have been issued for markets, the hospitality industry, night clubs, religious and social gatherings, the transport sector, etc."

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday, January 14, announced 46 new cases in Edo state.

This has brought the number of the case in the southsouth state to 3,189.

Meanwhile, the Lagos state government has re-affirmed its earlier directive that all schools in the state, both public and private (below tertiary level), should resume on Monday, January 18, for the second term 2020/2021 academic session.

Kayode Abayomi, the head of public affairs in the state's Ministry of Education, said in a statement sighted by Legit.ng that the affirmation was made on Friday, January 15, by the commissioner for education, Folasade Adefisayo.

The commissioner noted that state government's decision is in line with the federal government’s resolution after reaching a consensus with relevant stakeholders.

In a related development, Legit.ng reported that Bauchi state government said it would not go back on its plans of reopening schools on Monday, January 18.

Aliyu Tilde, the state commissioner of education, made this known on Tuesday, January 12, adding that all the 4,816 schools in Bauchi will resume for the 2020/2021 academic session.
