Lagos government releases final resumption date for public, private schools

- Despite the rise in the cases of COVID-19, Lagos state government said its decision to reopen schools on Monday, January 18, stands

- The state's education commissioner, Folasade Adefisayo, said the state's decision is in line with that of the federal government

- Adefisayo, however, called on all schools in the state to ensure strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols

The Lagos state government has re-affirmed its earlier directive that all schools in the state, both public and private (below tertiary level), should resume on Monday, January 18, for the second term 2020/2021 academic session.

Kayode Abayomi, the head of public affairs in the state's Ministry of Education, said in a statement sighted by Legit.ng that the affirmation was made on Friday, January 15, by the commissioner for education, Folasade Adefisayo.

Legit.ng gathers that the commissioner noted that state government's decision is in line with the federal government’s resolution after reaching a consensus with relevant stakeholders.

She urged students and members of staff to stay safe and adhere strictly to COVID-19 guidelines, adding that schools must provide soap, wash hand basin, alcoholic hand sanitisers, thermometers and other essential items.

The commissioner further disclosed that administrators of both public and private schools are expected to ensure full compliance with the guidelines for re-opening in their respective schools.

Lagos state is Nigeria's epicentre of the coronavirus infection, with 38,549 confirmed cases, 30,566 recoveries and 266 deaths.

The state also has 7,717 active COVID-19 patients, according to the data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Meanwhile, some Nigerians on social media have criticised the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for saying it may be unsafe to reopen universities due to the risks of COVID-19 infection.

The union claimed an assessment of COVID-19 protocols in the universities showed that the tertiary institutions were not ready for safe reopening even though lecturers are eager to start work.

However, the statement by ASUU has sparked huge criticisms from Nigerians on Twitter.
