The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the wake of allegations and verbal attacks that have been rained on Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has issued a strong warning on his safety.

On behalf of CAN, Barrister Joseph Bade Daramola, the religious body's general secretary, said that while persons who hate to hear truth spoken to power may say whatever they like about the cleric, no harm must happen to him, Channels TV reports.

Moreover, Daramola wondered why the police is yet to break its silence on the alleged threats that have been issued against Kukah after his Christmas message in which he only aired his views on the state of the nation, especially in the area of security.

He added that the Christian body is eager to know "if those threatening the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto are above the law or if they are sacred cows in the country."

Concerning the call for Kukah to leave Sokoto, Daramola, directing attention to President Muhammadu Buhari, said the bishop was posted to the state by the Roman Papacy, and as such, "threatening him to leave is a global threat to Christianity."

CAN went on:

“In this same country, we have a Catholic Bishop whose name is synonymous with President Muhammadu Buhari yet the Catholic Church has not deemed it fit to sanction him because freedom of speech and association is not only a constitutional matter but godly.”

Earlier, Kukah had knocked the current administration when in his sermon he lamented that Nigeria had become one huge wasteland, huge debris of deceit, lies, treachery, double-dealing, and duplicity where darkness reigns supreme.

He made the disclosure on Wednesday, January 6, while delivering his sermon at St Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral, Kaduna, during the wake-keep of Archbishop Peter Yariyock Jatau, the Archbishop of Kaduna Catholic Diocese.
