COVID-19: This is the truth about alleged second lockdown, presidency speaks up (video)

- There is fake news going round that the PTF has imposed a second lockdown

- The claim, however, was debunked by the coordinator of the PTF, Sani Aliu, on Thursday, January 14

- Aliu called on Nigerians to always verify reports gotten from social media platforms before believing and spreading them

- This message was contained in a video shared by Lauretta Onochie, a presidential media aide

The presidency has reacted to viral fake news on social media that the federal government has imposed another lockdown due to the spread of COVID-19.

A presidential media aide, Lauretta Onichie, who described the claim as fake shared a video clip on her Twitter page in which the national coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Sani Aliu, completely debunked the report.

Aliu made it clear that the PTF has established ways of propagating information of great national importance.

The PTF boss called on Nigerians to disregard the news as they go ahead with their usual daily activities.

He, however, urged citizens to strictly adhere to the safety protocols given by government agencies and international health organisations.

Meanwhile, the federal government said it was not contemplating another nationwide lockdown.

The PTF on COVID-19 on Thursday, January 14, dismissed reports that it was planning to lock down the country.

Willie Bassey, a spokesperson for the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, in a statement, described the reports of another lockdown as misinformation.

The statement read in part:

“The PTF wishes to state categorically that there is no such consideration at any of its meetings nor has any recommendation been made to this effect to the president."

The official said such misinformation is capable of causing unnecessary panic and anxiety among the populace. He urged Nigerians to disregard the rumour and continue to adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines specified by the taskforce.
