Benue govt imposes dusk to dawn curfew, gives reason, exceptions

- The activities of bandits in Benue is now unbearable

- To stop the trend, the state government has imposed an 8am to 6pm curfew

- The government announced that this decision took effect from Wednesday, January 13

In a bid to curb the activities of bandits, kidnappers, and all armed criminals, the Benue security council has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the Sankera axis of Katsina-Ala and Ukum local government areas.

Announcing the council's decision on Wednesday, January 13, the deputy governor, Benson Abounu, said the curfew would span from 8:00pm to 6:00am evceryday, Channels TV reports.

Abounu particularly said the government will sustain the ban on motorcycles in the axis as they are often used by bandits to attack residents.

However, he noted that exception will be given to persons who are seen looking for medical help during the curfew hours.

His words:

“The movement of patients and pregnant women among other very necessary cases for medical attention using motorcycles where there is no vehicular presence would be allowed after a thorough investigation.”

Meanwhile, in an onslaught against the banditry in the country, the Nigerian troop said it had neutralised some suspected armed bandits and recovered arms in Benue.

According to a statement released by Major General John Enenche, the coordinator of Defence media operation, the successful operation was carried out by the Operation Whirl Stroke on Monday, December 21, 2020.

Enenche said the operation was launched after credible intelligence gathering, with the Nigerian troop responding to report on the presence of the armed bandits who had been linked to the recent killing in Makurdi, Benue state capital.

His words:

"Troops swiftly mobilized to the identified location where they had contact and engaged the criminals in firefight. During the encounter, troops overwhelmed the bandits and killed one of them, while others fled with various degrees of gunshot wounds.
