Comrade Sobur Salami, the national vice president of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has said the body is not going to put the universities on another lockdown through strike action.

Salami made this disclosure while speaking on Channels TV's Sunrise Daily monitored by Legit.ng on Tuesday, January 12.

He said unlike the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), SSANU will only embark on a sensitisation protest to call the attention of stakeholders to the plight of the body.

It would be recalled that Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and SSANU agreed to embark on a three-day protest and strike.

Both SSANU and NASU on Sunday, January 10, announced that the planned industrial action would kick-off from Tuesday, January 12.

Making clarification, the SSANU national vice president said the body is only concerned about the welfare of its members.

Salami said SSANU wants the federal government to recognise the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the heads of the unions addressing issues like irregularities in the IPPIS payment, the non-payment of earned allowances, and arrears of minimum wage and others.

He said:

"We don't want to to go the way of shutting of varsities. We have MoU which we want the government and stakeholders to consider. A strike will not do justice to us at this time.
"Our protest is to draw sensitisation to prevail on govt to do the needful."
