FG sends warning to Nigerians as COVID-19 cases rise above 100,000

- The NCDC has spoken about the number of Nigerians that have died from the disease

- Ihekweazu who heads the NCDC instructed health workers on what to do about the spike in the number of infections

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that the country now has over 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The director-general of the agency, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, at a COVID-19 briefing on Monday, January 11, said Nigeria had reached a critical level due to the pandemic, Daily Trust reported.

Ihekweazu said:

“We have now reported over 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

“This is a stark reminder of the reality we live in now: a virus that has affected over 100,000 lives and led to over 1,300 deaths within 11 months in Nigeria, with millions more globally.”

He disclosed that the spike of the disease has reached a point where the hospital capacity will no longer be able to cope with more serious COVID-19 cases.

Ihekweazu further said that health workers would be forced to make tough decisions as they handle COVID-19 cases.

He urged Nigerians to observe COVID-19 guidelines, noting that the 100,000 cases and over 1,000 deaths are not just numbers.

According to The Sun, the NCDC director also highlighted the need for health workers to maintain a higher index of suspicion for COVID-19 among patients.

Ihekweazu warned that the virus was spreading fast, causing mild symptoms in some and severe illness/death in others.

Meanwhile, the federal government has announced a distribution plan for the COVID-19 vaccine in the country.

The Punch reported that the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCD) said the rate of infection in each state was the criterion used in the distribution.
