NIN: FG says fraudsters have launched fake NIMC app to defraud Nigerians

- The federal government of Nigeria has warned Nigerians against using the fake NIMC app

- Isa Pantami had said that the app recently launched by NIMC can link 7 SIMs to one NIN

- NIMC, however, said on Monday, January 11, that a fake app has been launched by fraudsters

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned the public to beware of a fake app that claims to help link the National Identity Number (NIN) to SIM cards.

Legit.ng reports that in a post on its Twitter handle, NIMC dissociated itself from the app, saying it is run by fraudsters who use it to harvest people’s NIN and Bank Verification Number (BVN).

NIMC tweeted:

“The app was not created by NIMC or the federal government of Nigeria. It is run by fraudsters who are currently harvesting people’s NINs and BVNs by default."

The commission advised people to protect their data and stop disclosing personal information to unauthorised persons or platforms.

Legit.ng recalls that the minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Pantami, recently announced that a mobile app launched by NIMC can be used to link seven SIM cards to one NIN.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that all applicants for the NIN would be required to pay N15,000 to correct their dates of birth in the database of the NIMC.

It was reported that the NIMC's regional coordinator, Funmi Opesanwo, stated this on Wednesday, January 6, at the commission’s office in the Alausa area of Lagos state.

NIN holders are also required to pay a processing fee of N5,000 for card renewal or card replacement as well as an address modification fee of N500.

In another report, Pantami said the enrolment for the NIN should not consume the time of the applicants.

The minister made this known on Friday, January 8, during a programme on Channels TV, adding that the enrolment should not take more than five minutes.

Pantami further stated that prospective applicants can "complete the form virtually without visiting any office."
