Rob Holding has penned a new long-term deal with Arsenal after he almost left the Emirates last summer, Daily Mail reports.

The England defender has been outstanding for the Gunners in recent times and has made 18 appearances for the club in all competitions this season.

The 25-year-old joined Arsenal from Bolton in 2016 and has struggled to hit top form following his knee injury in 2018 after spending nine months on the sidelines.

Holding was set for a loan deal to Newcastle last August but was put on hold by Mikel Arteta and the Englishman has made his selection count so far.

His deal at the Emirates was set to expire in 2023 but helped the Gunners win their 14th FA Cup trophy last season.

The summer arrivals of Gabriel and Pablo Mari did not threaten his position after he made a U-turn in fighting for his place at the center-back position.

Arteta heaped praises on the defender for his recent form of late saying:

"It was almost a year ago when he came back from his injury. He had a period when he did not play.
"When you compare how he has evolved from there to now, in a year’s time, it is incredible.
"It is down to him, how professional he is, how much he wants to learn, how much he puts into every training session and then his character and his personality."

Holding captained Arsenal during their 2-1 loss at Everton and posted a remarkable performance in their wins over Chelsea, Brighton, West Brom and the FA Cup over Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Arsene Wenger has revealed that Sol Campbell was booed in training by his teammates to help him prepare for the north London derby against Tottenham.

The center-back started his career with Spurs and spent nine years at White Hart Lane before joining London rivals Arsenal in 2001.

Wenger did not make his bid for the former England defender public due to the negative reactions the player was likely to face from rival fans.
