US speaker proceeds to impeach Trump, calls on VP to oust him

Amid the Capitol violence that led to the death of at least four people, US House of Representatives will proceed with legislation to impeach President Donald Trump, according to Nancy Pelosi, the speaker.

Yahoo News citing AP as its source reports that Pelosi's team on Monday will seek a vote on a resolution calling on Pence and Cabinet officials to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Pelosi made the disclosure on Sunday, January 10, as the United States' House of Representatives could start impeachment proceedings on Monday, January 11.

Legit.ng recalls that the US House speaker had earlier called Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office.

Pelosi on Thursday, January 7, noted that if it is not done, the House may move forward with impeachment proceedings.

With a full House vote expected on Tuesday, January 12, Pence and the Cabinet would have 24 hours to act before lawmakers would move towards impeachment.

Pelosi in a letter to colleagues explained that the House will act with urgency because Trump represents an imminent threat, adding that the assault on America's democracy was intensified by the president.

Amid the pressure of the American leader to step down rises, Republican senator, Pat Toomey has joined Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski in calling for Trump to resign.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Pelosi told President Trump to resign following the Capitol violence which led to four people dead.

The US speaker said on Friday, January 7, that the House could impeach the president if he fails to resign due to his role in inciting the violence which took place at the Capitol.

The Speaker said she had instructed the Rules Committee to be on standby to move forward with other options should the president fail to resign.

In a related development, Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has condemned the attack on the US Capitol by the country's citizens who were protesting alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election.

In a statement signed by its national secretary, Senator John Akpan Udoedehe, the APC extolled the virtues of the US democratic system but noted that a leader with integrity is also very important.
