COVID-19: We'll impose lockdown if infections increase, says PTF
- The federal government has alerted Nigerians that it might impose another lockdown soon
- This was announced by the coordinator of the PTF Sani Aliu on Thursday, January 7
- Aliu said this will be the government's option if the cases of COVID-19 continues to rise

Although the federal government has said on different occasions that it will not impose another lockdown, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 is now reconsidering this position.
The PTF said that if the number of new cases continues to increase, the government will be forced to take the crucial important decision, Punch reports.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, the national coordinator of the PTF, Sani Aliyu, on Thursday, January 7, stated that the rise in the number of infections for the second wave of the virus is becoming alarming.

Aliyu said:
“If these numbers continue to go up and we start having significant deaths, we will have no option. If we do not want to lock down, now is the time to make sure that we follow the interventions.
“The Presidential Task Force is very concerned about the increasing daily numbers that we are recording.
“On 6th of January 2021, we recorded 1,664 infections. This is yet another all-time high in Nigerian and we must all take full responsibility through compliance and vigilance."
Meanwhile, the PTF had warned that another lockdown is likely in Nigeria with the rising cases of coronavirus in the country.
The PTF expressed concerns that Nigerians had continued to shun the prescribed protocols despite the second wave of the virus hitting hard.
Aliyu said the only way to prevent a re-introduction of a lockdown is by adhering to the advisories by citizens.

Aliu said:
“If numbers continue to go up, all options are on the table. They may be inconvenient, but they will not be as difficult as a lockdown.
“We are talking holistically here. All I can say is that 33 people died of COVID-19 in the last one week. Are we saying those people died for nothing? We have just recorded 6,000 cases in one week, far more than we ever recorded.”
Many Nigerians continue to kick against any plan to lockdown.
