Nigeria, like other countries in the world, is currently grappling with the second wave of the deadly COVID-19.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has repeatedly raised concern and warned Nigerians against flouting directives on coronavirus.

Legit.ng reports that the COVID-19 second wave is becoming scarier based on the cases being recorded on a daily basis if compared with the first wave.

The information released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday, January 7, indicated that Nigeria now has 95,934 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 77,982 survivors discharged and 1,330 deaths recorded so far.

Based on the NCDC information, Legit.ng hereby highlights three states with the highest number of recorded cases of COVID-19:

1. Lagos

Lagos state remains the epicentre of COVID-19. The state is breaking records almost on daily basis. According to the NCDC report of Thursday, 7, Lagos recorded the highest coronavirus infections in the country. It recorded 807 cases. This represents 51.56% of infections recorded by the nation that day.

It was gathered that Lagos cases account for 35.58% (34, 136 cases) confirmed COVID-19 infections since the pandemic broke out in February 2020.

The state has also recorded 250 deaths, accounting for 18.8% of deaths nationwide while it has been able to discharge 28,039 patients who survived the virus.

2. FCT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the nation's capital, has been recording huge cases of COVID-19 infections. The FCT is next to Lagos and has in some cases taken over the lead from the state.

The FCT’s highest record in a single day was 407 cases recorded on January 6, 2021. Abuja accounts for 13,071 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country. This represents 13.6% of national infections.

The nation's capital recorded 106 deaths reported, the FCT accounts for 7.96% of deaths recorded in the country. In terms of discharge rate, it has reported 7,749 recoveries so far, representing 9,9% of national recoveries.

3. Oyo

The active cases in the state are put at 673, representing 4% of national active cases. It has total confirmed coronavirus cases of 4,157, representing 4.3% of national confirmed cases.

The pacesetter state also recorded 53 deaths. This represents 3.98% of national deaths and it has discharged 3,431 survivors, which represents 4.3% of national recoveries.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that amid the scare of the second wave of the highly deadly virus in Nigeria, some states have chosen to announce and approve the full reopening of schools.

It was reported that Nigeria recorded 91,351 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 75,699 recoveries and 1,318 deaths after 1204 new cases were reported by the NCDC on Monday, January 4.
