FG says Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines will arrive by end of January 2021

- The Nigerian government has expressed optimism over the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

- The country's National Primary Health Care Development Agency is already making plans to receive the vaccines

- The agency has revealed the category of people who will first be vaccinated

The Nigerian government has disclosed that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in the country at the end of January 2021.

Faisal Shuaib, the head of Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) made the disclosure in a chat with The Guardian.

He disclosed that the federal government plans to use the vaccines to inoculate 40% of the population in 2021 and a further 30% in 2022.

Shuaib stated that certain groups of people will be the first to receive the vaccines when they arrive.

He noted that those first in line for the vaccine include health workers and other identified frontline workers in the country.

Shuaib also stated that the elderly (50 years and above), and persons less than 50 years but with co-morbid conditions and areas with high disease burden will be prioritised.

He said the government has enough vaccine freezers and refrigerators to store both at the ultra-cold chain temperatures and the normal + 2 to + 8.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for the Disease Control (NCDC) announced 1,354 new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria on Tuesday, January 5.

The new cases were recorded in 22 states with Lagos, the epicentre of the deadly virus in Nigeria, topping the log with 712 infections.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) followed on the record with 145 new cases as Plateau, Kwara and Kaduna followed closely behind with 117, 81 and 54 cases respectively.

In another news, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state governor, has expressed concern over the high cases of coronavirus recorded in the state.

Legit.ng reported that he urged residents in the state to observe measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

He said the state government was doing everything possible to avoid another lockdown.
