Desperate politicians aligning with bandits to destabilise Nigeria, says Umahi

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has accused desperate politicians of aligning with bandits to destabilise Nigeria.

Umahi made the comments on Tuesday, January 5 after a virtual meeting with his colleagues in the southeast region of the country.

The Ebonyi state governor is the chairman of the South East Governors Forum, a position he retained even after his recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Channels Television quoted the governor as saying:

“There are so many desperate politicians in all the political parties that are so desperate for power and they have aligned with some bandits in the southeast to destabilise the nation.”

Governor Umahi did not explain how he got the information, neither did he name any politician during his comments.

In a related development, General Kunle Togun (rtd), former boss of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) and current chairman, Oyo state Amotekun (Security Network) corps, has revealed that foreign Fulani herdsmen are planning to overrun the southwest region of Nigeria.

According to him, the wave of banditry and kidnapping in the southwest is a result of alien terrorists’ infiltration of the region.

Recall that the national chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Audu Ogbeh, recently revealed what happens after captives are rescued from the clutch of terrorists and bandits following payment of ransoms.

Ogbeh, a former minister of agriculture said that with information available to the ACF, the criminals divert the ransom money into the purchase of arms.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to reorganise Nigeria's security architecture in 2021.

The president made the promise in his 2021 new year message to Nigerians on Friday, January 1.

He said his government is fully aware of its responsibility to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians, adding that they will not relent in learning and adapting to changing threats to national security and civic wellbeing.
