NCDC confirms 917 new cases of COVID-19 as death toll rises to 1,311

- Fears that Nigeria may have entered a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow

- Recent data released by the NCDC on Sunday, January 3, shows that Nigeria recorded 917 new cases of COVID-19

- FCT tops the list of the cases with 222 while it was followed by Lagos which recorded 214

Nigeria has recorded 917 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus pandemic as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Lagos state had 222 and 214 respectively.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) broke the news on Sunday night, January 3, via its official Twitter handle, @NCDCgov.

Kaduna state recorded 119 cases while it was followed by Plateau which has 92. Nasarawa state recorded 50 cases while Oyo state also recorded 41 cases.

Legit.ng notes that with the new cases, the country’s total number of confirmed infections has now exceeded 90,000.

According to the federal health agency, in the last 24 hours, nine deaths and 255 recoveries were recorded.

The NCDC says that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria now stands at 90,080. A total number of 75,044 cases have been discharged while 1,311 deaths have been recorded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has warned that another lockdown is likely in Nigeria with the rising cases of coronavirus in the country.

The PTF expressed concerns that Nigerians have continued to shun the prescribed protocols despite the second wave of the virus hitting hard.

National coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Sani Aliyu, said the only way to prevent a re-introduction of a lockdown is by adhering to the advisories by citizens.
