Former UNILAG VC, Prof Ibidapo Obe, reportedly dies from COVID-19 complications

- Another prominent Nigerian have died from the complications of the dreaded COVID-19

- This time it is a 71-year old famous professor of systems engineering, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe

- Professor Ibidapo-Obe was also a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos

A former vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, has been declared dead.

Professor Ibidapo-Obe was, until his death, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of First Technical University, Ibadan.

His death was confirmed in a statement on Sunday, January 3 by the registrar and secretary to the council of the university, Olayinka Balogun.

Part of the statement read:

“With heavy heart, and submission to the will of God I write to inform Council members of the transition to glory of Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, First Technical University, Ibadan which occurred today 03/01/2021.

“I pray for the repose of the soul of the departed.”

Although the statement did not disclose the cause of Professor Ibidapo-Obe's death, some media reports stated that he died from COVID-19 complications.

The chairman of the Academic Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) in the University of Lagos, Dele Ashiru told Premium Times on the phone:

“He died today from COVID-19-related complications. The late professor’s family has properly briefed us.”

Some Nigerians have been reacting to the death of the professor via social media.

Taofeeq Are wrote on Twitter:

“A very distinguished and respected professor. As a VC, he was pure class. God rest his soul and comfort the family and all Akokites.”

Adebayo Oyeniyi wrote:

“I remember meeting him with my mum when he was Dean of Engineering. His words of wisdom and encouragement were profound. My mum (who sadly passed away last year) always referred to him as her favourite cousin.”

Steve Ifeanyi wrote:

“May his soul rest in peace. He was my VC at AE-FUNAI. A gentleman to the core. He was indeed a rare gem.”

“Six years ago when I met him for the first time in Ebonyi state, he was then the VC of AE-FUNAI, he remains one of the nicest and humble personality I've ever met in my life.”

Meanwhile, Prophet Temitope Joshua, the founder of The Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), has released anointing water and a church sticker which he says will be used to fight coronavirus and other ailments ravaging the world.

The SCOAN founder said he was mandated to release the “faith tools” after a long period at the prayer mountain where he went to seek God’s face on the cure for the afflictions facing the world.

In a related development, US president-elect Joe Biden has appointed Nigerian-born Osaremen Okolo as one of his advisers on COVID-19.
