COVID-19: NCDC records 1,074 new cases, 5 deaths

- While the world battles to bring an end to the ravaging coronavirus, the number of cases keeps increasing daily

- In Nigeria, over a thousand cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours while five persons lost their lives to the deadly infection

- So far, the West African nation has been able to test only 948,048 persons since February 2020 when the first case was discovered

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday, January 1, recorded another high case of coronavirus with 1,074 new infections.

The latest update on its official Twitter handle shows that the cases were recorded in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Topping the list is Lagos with 642 cases, followed by Kaduna which recorded 92 cases.

According to the NCDC report, five deaths were also recorded and there were 660 recoveries in isolation centres across the country in the past 24 hours.

A statement by the health agency read:

"Our discharges today include 459 community recoveries in Lagos State and 156 community recoveries in Katsina State managed in line with guidelines."

Below is a breakdown of the states and the number of cases recorded:

  • Lagos - 642
  • Kaduna - 92
  • Rivers - 78
  • FCT - 66
  • Gombe - 66
  • Kano - 35
  • Ogun - 31
  • Katsina - 22
  • Plateau - 20
  • Abia - 7
  • Niger - 4
  • Oyo - 4
  • Akwa Ibom - 3
  • Delta - 2
  • Osun - 2

Ten months after the first case of COVID-19 was recorded, Nigeria with a population of over 200 million is yet to test a million people. So far, only 948,048 people have been tested since the first confirmed case was announced on February 2020.

The total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria stands at 88,587, with 74,373 discharged and 1,294 deaths.

Earlier, the government rolled out new travel rules for passengers coming in from South Africa and the United Kingdom which takes effect from Monday, December 28.

This was as a result of the discovery of a new variant of COVID-19 in these countries.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, December 24, the national coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF), Dr Sani Aliyu, said all passengers coming from both countries must use the Nigerian international travel portal to register.

In another update, the government said travellers from both countries will have to undergo COVID-19 test before being allowed to enter Nigeria.

With effect from Tuesday, December 29, they must take the test within 96 hours pre-boarding and show proof of payment of arrival repeat test in Nigeria.
