Group hails Buhari, service chiefs over return of peace to northeast

- President Muhammadu Buhari and the service chiefs have been commended for their effort in fighting insurgency in Nigeria

- The commendation was given by the North East Peace Ambassadors considering the restoration of peace in the region this Christmas

- According to the group, residents of various communities in the northeast are enjoying some level of peace

The NorthEast Peace Ambassadors (NEPA) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari and the service chiefs deserve much credit for the return of peace in the northeast region of the country.

The group said the president and the service chiefs should also be commended for another Christmas celebration free from attacks by insurgents in the region. 

In a statement seen by Legit.ng and signed by Sadiq Bulama and Usman Geidam, NEPA's president and secretary-general respectively, the group said that unlike some years ago, people were reunited with their families during this time.

The group said residents of various communities in the region are enjoying quality time during this season of celebration.

Recalling that members of the Boko Haram terrorists had attacked Gadaka and Damaturu in Yobe states on Christmas Day in 2011 among many others, the group said there was no breach of security across the six states. 

The group said:

"People travelled from far and near to spend time with loved ones as roads that were considered dangerous in the past have been cleared of all security threats and opened by the military while terrorist hideouts have been subdued and their foot soldiers flushed."

It also said this year, people are celebrating the festive season in peace and love.

NEPA thanked President Buhari for his leadership that is steadily bringing complete normalcy to the northeast.

The group also said that the appointment of the service chiefs have proven to be a masterstroke, as they have displayed confidence and efficiency.

The statement said:

"We also thank the troops for their resilience, sacrifice and patriotism which has made life worth a living for us."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari had passed a verdict on the activities of the Nigerian service chiefs.

The president while speaking on the state of the nation and the security challenges bedevilling the country said the efforts by the service chiefs in the fight against insurgency is not enough.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno, addressing State House correspondents said the president had charged security chiefs to redouble their efforts in ending terrorism across the nation.

In other news, the presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, condemned the call for the sack of the service chiefs.

Shehu said the call for the replacement of the service chiefs in some quarters is out of place.
