2021 budget: Buhari to sign appropriation bill into law on Thursday, December 31

- The 2021 budget will be signed into law on Thursday, the presidency has revealed

- Principal officers of the National Assembly, VP Yemi Osinbajo and some members of the current cabinet are expected to grace the event

- The budget signing event may, however, be done online due to the rising number of the COVID-19 cases

President Muhammadu Buhari will assent into law the 2021 appropriation bill on Thursday, December 31, according to a presidential source.

Making this disclosure is Garba Shehu, a senior media and publicity aide to the president, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng recalls that the 2021 appropriation bill was passed by the Nigerian Senate during a plenary on Monday, December 21, months after it was presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari had in October presented N13.08 trillion budget to the lawmakers of both legislative chambers.

The Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, expressed confidence in the budget supporting the public expenditure despite the coronavirus pandemic which is responsible for the economic crisis.

In a subsequent development, Shehu said his principal will sign the budget into law on Thursday with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate president Lawan, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and other principal of the National Assembly (NASS) expected to grace the occasion.

The presidential aide also disclosed that the 2021 budget will be presented to President Buhari for signing by Senator Babajide Omoworare, senior special assistant to the president on NASS matters.

The event may, however, be conducted virtually due to the rise in the COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, four senators recently elected through bye-elections in states across the country were on Tuesday, December 15, sworn-in by the Senate president Lawan.

The new senators include Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), Senator Henry Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West), Senator Cleopas Moses (Bayelsa Central) and Senator Nora Ladi Dadu’ut (Plateau South).

The clerk of the House administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance on the new senators at the inception of plenary. The new lawmakers are expected to represent their constituencies diligently by sponsoring bills that would further the national interest.
