- There is a brewing crisis in Lagos as Arewa community accused one of Governor Sanwo-Olu's commissioner of interfering in its leadership affairs
- A prominent northern group, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, has issued a statement regarding the development, saying it will now allow the Arewa traditional heritage to be desecrated
- The Arewa youths group also accused the Lagos state government of doing nothing as the commissioner makes efforts to cause disunity in the Arewa community
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has accused Lagos state's commissioner of waterfront, Kabiru Ahmed, of making attempts to cause crisis and disunity among the Arewa community in the state.
This is contained in a statement made available to Legit.ng on Wednesday, December 30, by AYCF's national president, Alhaji Yerima Shettima.
The northern group said some anti-peace and unity elements under the supervision of the Lagos waterfront commissioner are working to destabilise the Arewa community while the state government pretends all is well.
The AYCF said the state government's silence over the issue has created widespread suspicion that the commissioner was acting out the script of the Lagos state government.
Legit.ng gathers that the issue in contention has to do with the traditional leadership transition in the Arewa community.
The northern group said it condemned in the strongest terms an alleged conspiracy to create bad blood and destabilize the Arewa community by creating a wrong impression about Arewa Council of Chiefs' established succession process.
The AYCF said it cannot understand what concerned a waterfront commissioner with the unity, recognition and respect of the monarchs in the Arewa Community in Lagos, thereby accusing Ahmed of hijacking the role of the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs.
The statement reads in part:
"In a modern world governed by strategic communication, it is ridiculous that a Waterfront Commissioner would have the temerity to interfere with a matter strictly concerning the monarchy.

"We would like to categorically state that this subtle attempt to disunite and destabilize the unity of the Arewa Community in Lagos would be met with legitimate resistance from northerners of good conscience within and outside Lagos."
The AYCF said it would no longer fold its arms and watch the desecration of Arewa traditional heritage in Lagos by the waterfront commissioner.
In another report, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah's recent statement has been described by the AYCF as unguarded and open incitement to a military coup.
In a statement signed by its national president, Shettima, on Sunday, December 27, and sent to Legit.ng, the group said it was an insurrection against the democratically elected government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that Kukah had in his Christmas message on Friday, December 25, accused President Buhari of nepotism.
