The governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi, is being pressured to contest in the 2023 presidential election.

The deputy governor of the state, Kelechi Igwe, and other members of the state executive council have asked Umahi to formally declare his presidential ambition.

The Cable, citing NAN, reported that the officials visited the governor at his hometown at Uburu, Ohaozara local government area (LGA) to discuss the matter with him.

Speaking on behalf of the other officials, the deputy governor said they defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of Umahi.

He said:

“When you announced that it was time to move on, a lot of us were foot-dragging, wanting to make consultations but at the end, decided to move with you. I must confess that some of us didn’t like the APC but decided to join it because of you. So, we are declaring that you must contest the 2023 presidential election.”

The governor, in his remarks, urged the officials to keep supporting the APC. He said the party provides a platform for the Igbo people to evaluate themselves properly.

Umahi, however, did not disclose if he would be contesting in the 2023 presidential election.

Meanwhile, the clamour for the southeast geopolitical zone to produce the next president of Nigeria has pitched leaders in the area against one another.

The Nation reported that a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Pius Anyim, had said that Igbos outside the shores of the southeast should perish the thought of contesting for the presidency if the ticket is zoned to the region in 2023.
