COVID-19: FG imposes new rules on UK, South African passengers

- The federal government has taken a firmer position on its stand against foreigners who flout COVID-19 safety rules in the country

- Henceforth, passengers from the UK and South Africa must comply with new hygiene rules and protocols to stop the spread of the virus

- The government insisted that passengers from these nations that disobey the order will be repatriated

The federal government has set new safety rules for airlines and passengers from the United Kingdom and South African to stop the spread of the new strain of COVID-19 in these nations.

The government through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said that airlines in these nations must comply with the fresh safety measures or face serious sanctions that will be meted out on their passengers which will include repatriation, Punch reports.

According to a statement issued to this effect by the director-general of the NCAA, Musa Nuhu, airlines shall be fined $3,500 for every defaulting passenger.

The statement also read:

“Airlines may be required to return non-Nigerian defaulting passengers to point of embarkation.
“Repeated non-compliance by any Airline will lead to the suspension of the Airline’s Approval/Permit to Fly into the country.”

Meanwhile, another new variant of the coronavirus different from other discovered types of the disease appears to have been detected in Nigeria.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), made the disclosure on Thursday, December 24.

John Nkengasong, the head of the Africa CDC, said the new variant was not similar to the type discovered in the UK and South Africa.

He stated that further analyses of the samples were being conducted by the Nigeria CDC and the African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases to learn more about the new virus.

The UK Independent reported that Nkengasong said the alert about the apparent new COVID-19 type was based on two or three genetic sequences.

The official stated that the variant was found in two patient samples collected on August 3 and on October 9 in Osun state, Nigeria.
