However, reliable health experts in the country have come out to douse the tension with facts about the rumoured presence of the said variant of COVID-19.

One of such persons who recently gave their professional position on the issue is Cihkwe Ihekweazu, the director-general of the Nigeria Cente for Disease Control (NCDC).

Agreeing with the clear fact that viruses naturally mutate, Ihekweazu on Thursday, December 24, pointed out clearly that the disease is not yet in the country, adding that what Nigerians should seriously take note of is that calmness and safety are key.

His words:

“Over the last few days, we have monitored reports of the virus mutating in the UK, South Africa and some other countries but it is important to establish some facts about what we know, what we do not know and what we are willing to learn over the next few years.
“The most important fact to put out there to calm everybody’s nerves is that viruses mutate all the time.
