Runarsson was drafted in the starting lineup during the Tuesday night, December 22, clash taking Bernd Leno's place between the sticks.

However, he failed to justify his place in the team after he committed goalkeeping howlers to cost Arsenal the match.

Manchester City started the match off a flying start, with Gabriel Jesus scoring the opener inside three minutes of game play.

Alexander Lacazette went on to draw the north Londoners level at the half hour mark as the match headed into the break 1-1.

However, City restored their lead minutes into the second half through Riyad Mahrez, with Runarsson playing a role in the goal after he punched the ball into his own net from the Algerian's free-kick.

The goal was enough to cement the visitors' grip as they scored two more goals to win the tie 4-1.

Enraged fans later took to social media to condemn Runarsson for his costly mistake, leaving the keeper with no choice but to quit Twitter.

The shotstopper only joined the Gunners in September from French side Dijon, making his debut for the Emirates dwellers the following month in the Europa League.

He currently plays as backup keeper to Bern Leno who was rested on Tuesday night.

However, Leno is well in line to take his place when Arsenal play rivals Chelsea in a crucial Premier League clash on Saturday, December 26.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Pep Guardiola has advised Arsenal that sacking Mikel Arteta will be a huge mistake following his poor strings of results.

The Gunners were dumped out of the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup following City's 4-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.

But Guardiola believes his former assistant is still the man for the job despite Arsenal's dreadful form in their last 11 matches.
