Lionel Messi reached another major milestone in his illustrious career after becoming the only player to score 644 goals for just one club.

The 33-year-old shattered Pele's record after scoring in Barcelona's 3-0 triumph over Real Valladolid at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla earlier this week.

He achieved the feat in 749 appearances across all competitions since he broke into the Catalans' first team over 15 years ago.

"I've said it a lot, I see Leo happy here. He's very important for us with his creativity. You can see that when there are good players alongside him."

It would be recalled that the six-time Ballon d'Or winner made attempts to walk away from the club in August having complained about a number of issues battling the Camp Nou side.

However, he made a U-turn to see out his contract after no club was able to trigger his heavy release clause, especially in the season of coronavirus.

Koeman tried a new formation in Valladolid's win his defence capitulated in their 2-2 draw against Valencia over the weekend. He told the media as reported by Goal.

"We changed to improve the defence and the wings. We've seen a very serious performance with good concentration and good chances created."

Messi also provided an assist for his side's opening goal scored by Frenchman Clement Lenglet while Martin Braithwaite also got on the scores sheet.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has been crowned Spanish League's highest goals scorer for the 2019-20 campaign.

The 33-year-old emerged winner of the award for the seventh time after producing 25 goals in 33 appearances - while also assisting 21 other goals.

Though his individual performance could not help the Catalans win the league as they lost the title to arch-rivals Real Madrid, he ended up crowning his efforts with the prestigious prize.
