Lionel Messi got the world at their feet applauding following his record-breaking feat during Barcelona's 3-0 win over Real Valladolid.

The Argentine only scored a goal in the match but it took his tally to 644 for La Blaugrana, becoming the first to score that amount of goals for a single club.

In the clash against Valencia, Messi equalled Pele's 643 goals for Santos when he scored in the 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou.

The 33-year-old is now the only player on the planet to achieve the unbelievable goalscoring feat and Messi took to Instagram to express his happiness.

"When I started playing soccer, I never thought I would break a record.
"And even less the one that I achieved today that I had @pele ... I can only thank everyone who helped me in these years, my teammates, my family, my friends and everyone who supports me every day. Hug!!"

England and World Cup legend Gary Lineker also congratulated Messi on his achievement and stated no player will ever match that record.

Lineker said on his Twitter handle:

"Lionel Messi has scored his 644th goal for @FCBarcelona. He’s beaten @Pele’s record of most goals scored at a single club. This is a record that no one thought would ever be beaten. It will never be beaten again."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Lionel Messi looked like the greatest talent that ever played football in 2012 when he scored 91 goals for club and country in the calendar year.

The Argentine played a total of 69 matches for his national team and Barcelona that year and wrote his name in the history book at the age of 25.

Messi scored 79 of the goals for La Blaugrana and notched up 12 for the Albicelste to break Gerd Muller's 40-year record of 85 strikes in a year for Germany and Bayern Munich.

Legit.ng had also reported that Barcelona returned to winning ways following their comfortable 2-0 win over Real Valladolid in a midweek La Liga fixture played at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla.

Lionel Messi finally broke Pele's record adding his name to the scoresheet along with Clement Lenglet and Martin Braithwaite.

There were lots of chances created by Barca in the first period as Messi was unlucky to score after Jordi Masip made an acrobatic save from the Argentine's left-foot shot.
