- All is not well with the leadership of the PDP in the southeast state of Ebonyi as two factions fight for supremacy
- Following Governor Umahi's exit from the party, the national leadership dissolved the state executives and set up an interim committee
- However, the dissolved state executive sued the national leadership, causing a fresh crisis that has now led to the intervention of the police
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi state has been thrown into a leadership crisis following the defection of Governor David Umahi to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A report by Daily Sun indicates that the police on Sunday, December 20, took over the party's secretariat in the southeast state.
According to the newspaper, the police took the action following a court case filed over the state leadership of the party.
Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC) dissolved the state executive committee of the party following Governor Umahi's defection. The NWC also subsequently set up an interim committee.
However, the dissolved state leadership, led by its chairman, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, sued the PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus, the PDP and the newly inaugurated executive.
Nwebonyi then moved on to announce a meeting at the secretariat which caused confusion as the other faction of the party kicked.
With the matter still in court and suffering series of adjournment, the police in the state moved in to secure the secretariat.
Legit.ng gathers that two police vans were stationed in front of the secretariat which is located along the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway.
The police reportedly said their action was to forestall break down of law and order.
According to the security agency, no one will be allowed into the premises pending when the court ruled in the authentic leadership of the party in the state.
Meanwhile, the national caretaker committee of the APC has also dissolved the party's working committee in Ebonyi state.
The party said it took the action following the refusal of factions to withdraw their court cases as directed.
Legit.ng gathers that the APC's National Executive Committee (NEC) had directed all the factions in the state to withdraw their court cases and submit to internal party resolution mechanisms.
