COVID-19: Sanwo-Olu says Lagos is experiencing increasing cases and deaths

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said Lagos state cannot afford yet another total lockdown over the rising cases of COVID19.

The governor in a statement on Saturday, December 19, said a fresh lockdown would hurt the state’s healing economy.

He, therefore, urged residents to abide by the new guidelines prescribed to help the state contain the spread of the disease.

Sanwo-Olu said:

"These guidelines will affect us all but we need to be strong and we need to persevere.

We cannot afford another total lockdown so I enjoin us to keep observing the prescribed protocols and the required lifestyle adjustments that will help us enter 2021 stronger, healthier and safer."

He said the increasing cases and unfortunate deaths were because people in the state have relaxed their guard.

The governor pleaded with residents to conduct their affairs in a manner that will deliberately reduce and eliminate the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, new information indicates that Nigerians are faced with the prospects of entering a second lockdown if the rise in COVID-19 cases continues unchecked.

The National Economic Council (NEC) said another lockdown will be the last resort in the wake of the second wave of the disease, The Nation reported.

NEC which is chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made the disclosure after a virtual meeting on Thursday, December 17.

In another news, civil servants in Niger state have been directed to remain at home from Monday, December 21, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The state government in a statement issued through the office of the head of the civil service on Thursday, December 17, said the directive was made following the second wave of coronavirus, Daily Trust reported.
