COVID-19: We cannot afford another lockdown, Sanwo-Olu warns residents as cases rise in Lagos

- Lagosians have been given a strict warning as COVID-19 cases spike in the state

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has warned Lagos residents to comply with COVID-19 protocols, noting that the state, Nigeria's economic nerve centre, cannot afford another lockdown.

The Lagos state governor made this known in a statement seen by Legit.ng on Friday, December 18.

Governor Sanwo-Olu's statement follows the spike in the cases of COVID-19 cases in Lagos and other states in Nigeria.

"Dear Lagosians, you will all agree with me that we cannot afford another lockdown of the economy. Amidst an economic recession we must find a way to delicately balance the imperatives of life and livelihood."

The Lagos state governor said the current data it has does not require the introduction of a drastic lockdown but reiterated that there must be strict compliance with the preventive protocols.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also warned that the state government will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law to bear on any person or organization caught breaching the COVID-19 regulations and protocols.

Nigerians react

Nigerians on social media have reacted to the statement by the Lagos state governor.

Sanusi Abdullahi Abu Murshidah said on Facebook:

"Let everyone maintain and follow those simple health rules..and government should arrest those violating those rules not going into another lockdown..it won’t help us this time around. Get well soon bihdinillahi ta'ala, my Dear Governor!"

Meanwhile, to check the spread of the second wave of the deadly virus, Governor Sanwo-Olu has ordered civil servants in the state below level 14 to start working from home.

He also directed that all schools must shut down with immediate effect and until further notice.

The Lagos state governor equally banned concerts, carnivals and street parties until further notice. He added that all night clubs in the state must also shut down immediately.
