COVID-19: NCDC records 1,145 new infections in 1 day

- Nigeria made a new record on Thursday, December 17, in its daily COVID-19 infections

- The nation recorded the highest number of cases, over 1,145, since the virus was imported into Nigeria in February

- This figure brought the total number of cases to 76,207

According to the update of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control for Thursday, December 17, the nation recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases ever since the outbreak of the pandemic.

For Thursday, the NCDC reported that the number of new infections rose to 1,145 bringing the total confirmed cases to 76,207 with 67,110 persons discharged and 1201 deaths.

At the top of the list for the same day is Lagos with 459, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) comes behind recording 145 cases.

Other states with the number of cases are as follows:

Kaduna-138, Plateau-80, Katsina-70, Gombe-52, Niger-31, Kano-23, Bayelsa-21, Bauchi-18, Ondo-18, Rivers-17, Ogun-12, Oyo-12, Edo-8, Nasarawa-8, Ebonyi-7, Osun-6, Ekiti-5, Kebbi-5, Borno-4, Jigawa-3, Akwa Ibom-2 and Anambra-1.

Meanwhile, Osagie Ehanire, the minister of health, had said that Nigerians should expect to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of January 2021.

The minister stated this on Wednesday, December 16, during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

Legit.ng gathered that the minister said a technical working group in the Ministry of Health is already working on which vaccine would best suit Nigeria.

The federal government said it had put in place the machinery for receiving 20 million doses of the newly approved COVID-19 vaccine.

The executive secretary of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Faisal Shuaib, broke the news at the presidential task force on COVID-19 media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, December 10.

He noted that Nigeria is a member of COVAX, an international coalition, under the World Health Organisation (WHO) umbrella.
