Senator Hanga says fear of coup preventing Buhari from removing service chiefs

- The reported cases of insecurity in the country has raised doubts over the competence of the security chiefs

- The Nigerian Senate has consistently called for the removal of the military commanders

- Senator Rufai Hanga explained why the security challenges in the county should be blamed on the security chiefs

Senator Rufai Hanga has adduced two reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari has not heeded the calls for the sack of security chiefs.

Hanga who represents Kano Central at the National Assembly told the Daily Sun in an interview that one of the reasons was because the president values loyalty to himself over competence.

The lawmaker also claimed that Buhari is afraid that junior army officers may want to topple him if they replace the current security chiefs.

Hanga said:

"People have been crying for him to change the security chiefs but he has refused because he doesn’t want to be toppled. He said it openly that even though he is not satisfied with what the security chiefs are doing, that the problem is that down the ladder, there may be some ambitious officers.
"So, he is afraid that there may be people down the ladder who may stage a coup against him, so the security chiefs are the only people he trusts. He doesn’t care that they are doing damage to the country."

The senator said there is a need to change the service chiefs so that younger people can bring fresh ideas and competence.

He argued that the president is doing more harm to the country and even to himself by refusing to sack the security chiefs.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has summoned the minister of defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd.) over the massive abduction of schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina state,

The lawmakers also summoned the service chiefs and heads of other security agencies, asking all of them to appear at the Red Chamber to give an account of the measures being taken to rescue the students.
