Kankara abduction: Governor Masari gives fresh details, says 17 students found

- Governor Masari has assured that the security agents would rescue the abducted Kankara students

- About 600 students of GSSS in Katsina were kidnapped on Friday, December 11, by bandits

- The governor, however, noted that some of the abducted students have been found

Aminu Masari, the governor of Katsina, has said that 17 of the abducted students of Government Science Secondary School (GSSS) in Kankara local government area have escaped from the kidnappers' den.

Channels TV reports that the governor, who made this known in an interview on the evening of Monday, December 14, said the schoolboys were found and have been reunited with their families.

Legit.ng gathered he noted that efforts have been intensified to rescue the remaining schoolboys still in captivity, safely.

Governor Masari added that the victims escaped unconditionally and one of the abducted children’s father, who is also a teacher at the school, was contacted by the captors who warned that security forces should stop using helicopters around their hideouts.

Masari said:

“I was told that they spoke with a teacher whose son was also kidnapped that the bandits said the helicopter should stop roving and that they will collect ransom but they didn’t specify. And so they ended the call."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the president-general of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, condemned the abduction of the Kankara’s students in Katsina state.

It was reported that the Sultan, in a statement issued on Monday, December 14, by the JNI secretary-general, Khalid Aliyu, said the development pointed to lapses in Nigeria’s security architecture that needs to be urgently addressed.

In another report, some days after the abduction of students from a government-owned secondary school in Kankara, Katsina state, the Boko Haram group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The report stated that the wanted insurgent claimed the raid on the school was done to promote Islam and discourage un-Islamic practices.
