Irefin: Army fumigates headquarters as more soldiers test positive for COVID-19

- COVID-19 scare has gripped the Nigerian Army as over 400 personnel have undergone the coronavirus test

- This is as Major-General Johnson Irefin passed away due to COVID-19 complications

- The army headquarters complex in Abuja has also been fumigated while soldiers who attended the COAS conference have headed into isolation

Amid COVID-19 scare, the Nigerian Army on Monday, December 14, revealed that 26 officers have been confirmed positive for the coronavirus following the death of Major-General Johnson Irefin.

Sagir Musa, the acting director of the force's public relations, made this disclosure in Abuja, saying 419 personnel have been tested and told to proceed into isolation after the aborted COAS conference.

He said this is based on the directives issued by the chief of the army staff, Major-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, following the death of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Port Harcourt, The Guardian reports.

Musa further stated that all officers and soldiers working at the Nigerian Army headquarters have been tested while COVID-19 protocols are being strictly enforced across all units and formations.

He also disclosed that the entire army complex has been completely fumigated on Saturday, December 12.

"Consequently, as at Sunday the December 13, a total of 417 personnel have so far been tested with 26 confirmed positive cases. Currently, all participants are in self-isolation irrespective of their results while the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)-recommended COVID-19 treatment drugs were immediately issued to those that tested positive.”

Irefin's kinsmen question army general's COVID-19 death

Meanwhile, General Irefin's relations in Ayetoro-Gbede area of Kogi state are unconvinced that he died of COVID-19 complications as said by the military.

The kinsmen, speaking under two umbrella groups, called for more explanations on the demise of the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Port Harcourt
