Lionel Messi scored the all-important goal that powered Barcelona to a 1-0 victory over Levante at Camp Nou over the weekend.

The win propelled Ronald Koeman's men to 17 points from 11 matches as they currently occupy the eighth position on the log.

Messi fired a left-foot shot into the right corner of the post after receiving a superb overhead pass from Frenkie de Jong towards the end of the meeting.

The goal helped him to increase his tally for the Blaugrana to 642 goals across all competitions - just one more to equal the Brazil legend's number for Santos.

Republic World quoting Mundo Deportivo reports that the three-time World Cup champion scored 643 goals during his reign at the South American club.

The publication claims Messi will aim to beat that record just before the turn of a new year as they host table-toppers Real Sociedad in their next game.

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets also made history in the game against Levante after moving up on Barcelona’s all-time appearances list.

He rose to become the club's fourth player with the most appearance after featuring in his 593rd game for the La Liga side.
