Evra Says Henry 'Refused to Watch Arsenal' With Xhaka as Captain

Patrice Evra has disclosed that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry once turned off his TV set when he saw Granit Xhaka as the club captain during a Premier League game.

Xhaka remains a controversial figure at the club and fans have called for the player to be sold after he swore at them when he was substituted during a game against Crystal Palace in 2019.

The incident saw him got stripped of the captaincy and his reputation diminished drastically, but Arteta is attempting to help the player rediscover himself.

He, however, went back from hero to zero after he picked up a red card in Arsenal’s 0-1 home loss to Burnley.

Xhaka was sent off after VAR footage shows the player grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat in the 60th minute before the visitors found the back of the net 13 minutes later.

Evra who was in the Sky Sports studio during the tie brought up a story how club legend Henry switched off his TV after seeing Xhaka with the club’s captain badge.

Evra said, as cited in Daily Star:

“Thierry Henry, one day he invited me to his house. He said, ‘We’re going to watch the Arsenal game.’

“The first image we saw of Xhaka being the captain, Thierry Henry turned off the TV and said, ‘I can't watch Xhaka be the captain of my team.'

“We didn’t watch the game, we started talking about many things and he turned off the screen.

“It tells you everything about what even the legends of this club think about him [Xhaka]. He, again, let down his team."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is furious with Granit Xhaka over the player’s red card on Sunday, December 13, saying it is worse than that of Nicolas Pepe.

After the game, the under-pressure manager was asked if the red card was 'unacceptable' like Pepe's vs Leeds earlier this month and he says he is disappointed.

Arsenal have lost seven of their last twelve Premier League games this season and they are now languishing in 15th place on the log. The top two sides, Tottenham and Liverpool failed to claim victories in their respective matches against two London sides.
