Lionel Messi will be sold if he refuses to accept a pay cut, according to presential candidate Emili Rousaud.

The 33-year-old's future at the Camp Nou has been thrown in doubt after he asked to live his boyhood club at the end of last season.

And the Argentine superstar has been linked with a move to reunite with his former coach Pep Guardiola at Man City and Ligue 1 club, Paris Saint-Germain.

Rousaud who is running for presidency on January 24, 2020, discussed Messi's future amid the current economic condition.

Rousaud told ARA quoted by Goal:

"We'll have to sit down with Messi and ask him to make a salary cut.
"Right now, with things as they are, it's unsustainable.
"We'll ask him to make the sacrifice. If there's no agreement, then Messi will leave.
"Messi has written the most brilliant pages in the club's history. We have to honour our legends, but the reality is what it is.
"I believe that things have to be said as they are. We can't fool our members. We'll make every effort to ensure he stays, but always with the interests of the club first."

Messi scored as Ronald Koeman's Barcelona returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Levante in La Liga on Sunday.

Messi helped Barcelona bounce back from two consecutive defeats and they recorded a slim 1-0 win over Osasuna.

The sixth Ballon d'Or winner scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute to move nine points closer to league leaders Real Sociedad.
