President risks impeachment over late cabinet formation as Rep member introduces new bill
- A new legislation is being proposed at the House of Representatives which seeks to ensure a newly elected president does not waste time in forming his cabinet
- The bill is prescribing a maximum of 30 days for the president to assemble his cabinet or face possible impeachment

A new bill has been introduced at the House of Representatives which seeks to compel a new president to constitute his cabinet within 30 days after inauguration or risk impeachment by the National Assembly.
The Punch reports that the bill which is officially titled Transition and Assumption of Office Bill was sponsored by Kpam Sokpo.
Legit.ng gathers that the bill was introduced at the House on Wednesday, December 9.

The bill also seeks to compel state governors to name their cabinets within the same time or risk impeachment by the State House of Assembly.
Additionally, the bill seeks to establish a special fund for the presidential transition committee.
It reads in part:
“Subject to Sections 147 and 302 of the constitution, the President shall on assumption of office, appoint ministers within 30 days from the date he took the oath of office.
“The President shall constitute and appoint all boards of government agencies and parastatals that are due for constitution and appointment within two months from the date of his assumption of office.
“Where the President fails to comply with the provisions of this section without any justifiable reason, he shall be guilty of misconduct as provided under Section 143(2) (b) of the constitution.”
Legit.ng recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari spent about six months after he was elected in 2015 to select his cabinet members.

Speaking on the development years after, Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly claimed that President Buhari did not appoint ministers for six months after assuming office in 2015 due to lack of money to pay them.
Bakare, the presiding cleric of the Lagos-based church, said this in an interview he granted a media house in Calgary, Canada.
Nevertheless, the cleric also faulted President Buhari’s appointments, claiming that they were square pegs in round holes.
