Buhari asks governors to work with local chiefs to tackle insecurity

- Working with local rulers will be beneficial to the security of the country, Buhari has said

- Consequently, the president urged governors to work with the traditional rulers in their states

In efforts to tackle the rising spate of criminality and insecurity in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has called on all governors in the federation to partner local communities.

The president said it is necessary for the governors to work more with traditional rulers and community members.

According to Buhari, in a statement released by his aide on media, Garba Shehu, this will help improve local intelligence gathering. He said most importantly, this will aid the work of security agencies in tackling the insecurity menace.

He said the president made the call at the end of a security meeting with the 36 governors in Abuja on Tuesday, December 8.

Going further, he said Buhari listened to presentations by a governor from each of the six geo-political zones on their specific security challenges.

Also, the president said his administration had done well in the northeast and south-south, adding that the situation in the latter was still worrisome.

The president was quoted to have said:

“Every day I get situation reports about illegal refineries and the blowing up of pipelines. You must stop local rogues from sabotaging oil installations.
“Security is important and we must secure the whole country We are thinking very hard on the issue of kidnapping. We will make it possible for the military to get to the bandits and kidnappers and eliminate them.’’

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Coalition for Truth and Justice (CTJ) on Tuesday, December 8, applauded the governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, on his appraisal of Buhari's administration on the return of peace to the northeast.

CTJ said it is commendable that the governor of Borno state has identified efforts made by President Buhari's administration towards ending insurgency in the northeast region of Nigeria.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja attended by a Legit.ng reporter, CTJ's national coordinator, Timothy Charles, said Zulum's display of rare sincerity of heart and purpose is worthy of emulation.

Legit.ng previously reported that Zulum had urged soldiers of the Nigerian Army to face ongoing operations against insurgency rather than taking pride in the Edo state elections.
