A Human rights activist, Shehu Sani has criticised, the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, for saying that it may take the country another 20 years to end the insurgency.

The former senator in a tweet on Thursday, December 3, said the statement implies that Buratai was misleading Nigerians when he claimed the army had recorded victories over the insurgents.

Sani said the utterance by the military commander is an indication that those leading the fight against the terrorists have failed.

According to the former lawmaker, Buratai's recent view backs the narrative that the military has ran out of new ideas to battle the insurgents.

He said:

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has appealed to Nigerians, especially those living in the northeast, not to be discouraged by the recent killing of farmers in Borno state.

It said very soon, the Boko Haram sect and its bloodletting will be over, adding that the resort to attacking soft targets by the terrorists is a ploy to instil fear in the populace to remain relevant and cause confusion.

The coordinator, defence media operations, Major-General John Enenche, made the appeal while addressing journalists at the DHQ, Abuja on Thursday, December 3.

In another report, the DHQ stated that only the federal government has the power to decide on whether to involve mercenaries in the counter-insurgency war.
