- Umahi has dismissed the insinuation that he was made the governor of Ebonyi by Senator Anyim
- The Ebonyi state governor said Anyim was not in support of his governorship ambition and tried to dissuade former First Lady, Mrs Jonathan, from supporting him
- Earlier, Anyim had accused Umahi of plotting to kill him following his refusal to follow him to the ruling APC
The governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi, has denied the allegation in some quarters that the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, made him governor in 2015.
The Punch reports that Umahi spoke during an All Progressives Congress stakeholders’ meeting held at the Old Government House in Abakaliki.
He alleged that Nigeria's former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, wanted him to succeed Martin Elechi as the governor of Ebonyi state but Anyim opposed it.
The governor revealed that Anyim told Mrs Jonathan not to support him (Umahi) as he was going to disappoint her.
Legit.ng gathers that Umahi was the deputy governor during the Elechi administration.
“They said he made me; made who? When Senator Anyim went to the wife of Jonathan, Jonathan’s wife told him that she wanted me to be governor and he told her that I will disappoint her, that she should not.
“But Jonathan’s wife told him (Anyim), ‘no way, go and support him’. That was how the support came."
Governor Umahi's statement comes amid the allegation by Senator Anyim that his life is now in danger over his refusal to join the Ebonyi governor in defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Anyim in an open letter on Monday, November 30, accused Governor Umahi of plotting to kill him.
He notified the public, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, and the Department of State Services (DSS) over the alleged threat to his life.
Imminent political crisis in Ebonyi state
The Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora has called on the federal government to quickly intervene to avert a political crisis in Ebonyi, saying it is deeply interested in the peace, prosperity, and progress of the state.
According to the group, its call on government intervention is due to the recent open threat, intimidation of two prominent Ebonyi citizens for allegedly refusing to join the APC since the defection of Governor Umahi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 2 in Abuja and seen by Legit.ng, the AESID president, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, said Governor Umahi should be cautioned.
