Lionel Messi's destination next summer has taken a new twist as Chelsea have declared their interest in signing the Argentine forward, according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.

Things will not come easy for the London club as they will be battling Manchester city who have all the odds favouring them to land the Barcelona captain.

Balague said on his YouTube channel that the Blues owned by billionaire businessman Roman Abramovic are now in the equation for the 33-year-old.

Messi's current deal at the Camp Nou is set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season and City have been tagged favourites to sign the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

It is understood that Barcelona's plot to discuss a new deal with Messi would be difficult and reports have it that the Argentine is not or ready to extend his contract.

Getting a new club will not be difficult for Messi as he would become a free agent and no team would need to cough out a staggering transfer fee.

However, Messi's massive wages would need to be met and both Man City and Chelsea have the resources to meet his demands.

On the other hand, Messi could choose City over Chelsea due to his relationship with Pep Guardiola after the Spanish boss signed a new deal.

Messi and Guardiola won two Champions League and three La Liga titles during their spell together with La Blaugrana.

Barcelona are currently struggling in the league this season after eight matches and could have an impact on Messi decision to the leave the club at the end of the campaign.
