Nigeria's ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) says the recent defections that hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a result of cash-crunch and crises within the opposition.

The Sun reports that Yekini Nabena, the APC deputy national publicity secretary, made the disclosure in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, November 26.

According to Nabena, the opposition party is pushing Nigeria into a one-party state, and the APC who believes in a democracy does not subscribe to this.

The APC challenged other opposition political parties to take the place of the PDP as a healthy opposition.

The ruling party went on to allege that the PDP and former vice president Atiku Abubakar have already begun campaigning for its 2023 presidential candidate, with meetings in Dubai to plot their return.

The party’s statement read

"It is not surprising that progressive-minded members of the PDP have been defecting en masse from the opposition party to the APC in recent times.
"For a party unable to run its Secretariat, pay staff salaries and its leadership grappling with a crisis of confidence, it will be unfair to expect its progressive-minded members to remain in the PDP which has failed woefully as the supposed ‘main’ opposition party in Nigeria."
