- Chibuike Amaechi, minister of transportation is under fire from his home state
- Amaechi was absent at a recent presidential parley in Port Harcourt, Rivers state
- The minister has been asked to tender an apology to the people of the state and the APC
Minister of transportation Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has been asked to tender an apology to the people of south-south for staying away from the recent stakeholders meeting of the region with a presidential delegation.
All ministers in the federal cabinet and some elected representatives from the south-south were at the meeting except Amaechi.
The meeting, which held in Government House, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, November 24 had in attendance most presidential appointees from the region and elected representatives.
The absence of Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers state, drew the ire of an All Progressives Congress (APC) faction in the state.
The party, in a statement seen by Legit.ng and issued by Livingston Wechie, the media adviser to its caretaker committee chairman, Igo Aguma, asked Amaechi to tender an apology to the people of the state and the APC family.
Part of the statement read:
“The absence of the minister of transportation, who is supposed to be the minister representing Rivers state in the federal cabinet is most unfortunate as there can be no justification for his non-participation.
“This is because there can be no plausible reason for his disappearance from such an important meeting of the leadership of the south-south and the presidency aimed at discussing issues affecting our region.
“The action of Amaechi is evidence of the type of divisive and selfish leadership he is giving the APC in the state which is solely aimed at destroying the party at all cost for his personal gain in keeping with his vows.”
Some Nigerians have been commenting on Amaechi's absence at the parley.
Slim Chik wrote on Twitter:
“Amaechi is a wonderful guy...he knows very well that he has angered his people and they are really waiting for him. Building railways everywhere in the country without doing the same for his people is big a problem for him. He doesn't know how to approach his people anymore.”
Kasi Kanja wrote:
“Who has impacted the construction landscape of Nigeria like Amaechi? The south-south meeting was called by governors and to have a common face with the federal government hence no minister from the region was present.”
“He is not useful to the south-south.”
Meanwhile, the minister of works and housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, has advised the leadership of the APC to respect and honour the agreement reached at the formative stage of the party for zoning to take place.
Fashola while chatting with selected journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, November 24 stated there was an agreement on zoning which he said should be honoured.
