Cultism: Wike imposes 24 hours curfew on parts of Port Harcourt

In efforts to stop the ongoing killings by cultists in Rivers state, Governor Nyesom Wike has imposed a 24-hour total curfew on parts of Port Harcourt.

According to the governor, the curfew which takes effect from Monday, November 23, will be for two weeks.

He said the curfew covers the entire area around the Okoro-Nu-Odu flyover in Rumuokoro.

The governor said the curfew was declared due to an upsurge of cult activities and related violence.

Going further, he said his government is disturbed by the recent upsurge of cult activities and related violence and killings around the area.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the development.

Adex Fyne in his reaction wrote:

"This is commendable. Deal with it early so it doesn't become like some areas in Onitsha and Aba where you can't even walk freely during the day."

Onyeka Romanus noted that the governor wants to:

"Cover up Obigbo massacre. Nothing will happen here. He wants to claim that Obigbo is not the only place he imposed 24 hours curfew."

Chinweoke Onoyima said:

"Those calling him madman were those who were hailing him when he declared Rivers as a Christian state."

Olagunju Oluwasegunfunmi Ayomide added that:

"As a chief Security officer of the state, you failed to secure the lives and properties in your domain but always quick to blame Buhari for everything. Thank God you didn't mention Buhari for this as usual."

Emeka James wrote that:

"Wike is a confused governor. Now it is cultism, after he will say it is IPOB. 24 hours curfew! He should provide foodstuff for the people of that area."

Godday Moses posited that:

"It has been their way of life which you know! So no need for the curfew because you're just wasting your time and again remember how you used it in the just concluded election? Cultism is a culture and tradition in Rivers state that has come to stay, what is left now is for the house to approve it."

In another development, Legit.ng had reported that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state said one more governor will leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Also, the governor said his administration’s achievements have silenced the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties in the state.

The governor noted that ahead of the 2023 general election, the APC has again started making false promises to the people.

Some of the "false promises" he accused the party of making were that, it would construct a University of Transport, develop a deep seaport and industrial park in the state.
