Governor Ortom denies planning to defect from PDP to APC

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has reacted to claims that he may return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) which he left in 2018.

Ortom in a statement on Thursday, November 19, through his chief press secretary, Terver Akase said he has no plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Channels TV reported.

The governor’s aide described the defection rumour as mischievous statements from members of the opposition.

Akase said:

“Those involved in the impish allegation are clearly doing so to soothe their stuck-up apprehensions. Why will Governor Ortom return to APC? To do what?”

He disclosed that Ortom turned down the request of some notable persons asking him to defect from the PDP.

Akase said the governor has no intention to leave the PDP, noting that anyone insinuating a defection was being ridiculous.

The governor’s aide advised people behind the rumour to engage in more productive activities instead of spreading falsehood.

Meanwhile, Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi state has said that more governors of the PDP were making plans to join the ruling APC ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The defection of Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state to APC has sent a crucial message to all political actors in the southeast that the party may find it difficult to win the region during the next election.

In another news, Governor Davide Umahi’s special assistant on internal security and public utilities (Urban), Egwu Chidiebere, has resigned his appointment.

Premium Times reported that the governor’s aide resigned the same day Umahi’s formally defected from the PDP to the APC.
